Ouarzazate, Morocco – Solar thermal electricity (STE) could supply as much as 12 percent of the world’s power needs by 2050, given the right conditions, according to a new report. The report, Solar Thermal Electricity Global Outlook 2016, 4 th Edition, is released today by Greenpeace International, SolarPACES and ESTELA (European Solar Thermal Electricity Association). It also shows how STE could create millions of jobs.

The TuNur project aims to generate clean energy from a giant solar plant in the Tunisian Sahara from where it will be connected to the European electricity grid via a dedicated undersea cable. Energy intelligence published in its July issue “Tunisia Eyes Renewables, Efficiency as Gas output declines” where it depicts the energy situation in Tunisia and the strategies to face gas reserves decline and energy demand increase. These include renewable energy mix objectives and energy efficiency. As part of Tunisia energy strategy, solar export is being considered through the launch of TuNur project which is currently being considered for an agreement with the Tunisian Government.

The article explains the advantages of CSP compared to other renewable energy such as PV and wind. TuNur project is the first gigawatt-scale solar export project between Tunisia and Europe which has already achieved major milestones. The European Commission has approved over €1.2 billion to fund 23 innovative renewable energy demonstration projects under the first call for proposals for the NER300 funding programme. Regarding Concentrated Solar Power technology, four projects have been awarded including the MINOS project in Greece.

CSP Today speaks to Kevin Sara, founder and managing director of CSP developer, Nur Energie, about the logistics of developing CSP plants in the Greek islands, and to get the latest update on its plans to build a mega 2GW CSP plant in Tunisia.

This week, Nur-MOH SA, a joint venture between CSP developer Nur Energie and Greek energy heavyweight Motor Oil (Helas), was given the green light by Greek regulatory authorities to build a 38MW CSP plant on the island of Crete. The project, which will deploy BrightSource Energy’s LPT 500 technology, is poised to be the largest CSP tower installation in Europe.

TuNur Limited has filed its request for authorization with the Tunisian Ministry of Energy, Mines and Renewable Energy for a 4.5 GW solar export project. A newly established solar complex in the Sahara Desert in Southwest Tunisia, near Réjim Maâtoug (Kébili Governorate) would supply the growing European market for carbon-free electricity, and stimulate much needed economic development in the interior region of the country.

Greek Solar Project is Awarded Grant by the European Commission

Nur-Moh Heliothermal SA, the joint venture owned by UK based solar energy developer, Nur Energie Ltd, and Motor Oil Hellas, one of Greece’s leading energy companies, has officially been awarded a €42 Million grant. The grant comes from the ‘NER 300’ program, a financing instrument jointly managed by the European Commission, European Investment Bank and Member States.

The “EU Grid Integration of Tunisia-Based Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) Plant” study, conducted by TuNur with Imperial College of London and DNV KEMA Energy & Sustainability investigates the impacts of integrating 2GW of electricity generating capacity from TuNur’s CSP power plant in Tunisia into the European electricity system via an HVDC link from Tunisia to Central Italy. The study shows that solar imports from North Africa technically feasible and brings several grid integration benefits to the European electricity system.

Solar project developer Nur Energie Ltd. today announced the acceptance of the technical terms for the connection of its “TuNur” utility-scale solar export project from Tunisia into the Italian power network. Under the terms of the connection solution, Terna, the Italian high-voltage transmission network operator, has specified a preliminary technical solution to connect up to 2000 MW of solar power produced in the Tunisian desert to the Italian network, with grid infrastructure sufficient to transport electricity to neighbour European countries.
